Furnaces vs. Boilers

The question of furnace vs. boiler is a hotly contested one (pun intended). Both types of heating equipment have their advantages and disadvantages, and that often leads to confusion as to which type of heating equipment is the better choice for your home. Choosing the right one is not only an important factor in your quality of life, but also one for your budget. So to help you make a better-educated decision, here are some helpful tips about both types of heating.

Furnaces work by burning a fuel source, usually either natural gas or oil, to create heat through combustion. This heat is then transferred to air through a heat exchanger, and the heated air is then pumped throughout your home using your blower fan. This type of heating has been around for decades, and we’ve been using the idea of a flame to provide heat for our homes for almost as long as humanity has existed. You might even say that this is the oldest and most reliable type of heating we have.

Furnaces have a number of advantages. For starters, they’re generally fairly inexpensive, require very little maintenance, and can run pretty reliably without a lot of intervention so long as your fuel source doesn’t run dry. Gas-powered furnaces have the added benefit of hooking to a public utility, which means they can potentially generate heat endlessly. However, they have their drawbacks too. For example, a forced air system is always prone to leaks and heat loss, which means some rooms in your home may be warmer or cooler than others. Also the warm air they produce tends to rise straight up to the ceiling, especially from registers located high up on walls.

Boilers use water’s ability to collect, carry, and transfer heat in order to warm your home. Boilers function by heating water to the point where it boils (hence the name), and then pump it throughout your home. As the water travels through the pipes in your walls or through heat sources like radiators, the heat is transferred into the air, keeping your home warm.

Boiler systems immediately face a few added challenges compared to furnaces. For one, boilers are considerably more complex, and installing one in a home that isn’t already equipped with a boiler can be a costly endeavor. Likewise, the fact that they involve a network of pipes carrying water or even steam that’s under high pressure does carry some added risk—even a pinhole leak could cause serious damage to your home or burn injuries to anyone who may come in contact with the extremely hot water.

However, they have their benefits too. Boilers are significantly more efficient than furnaces, often using only a tiny portion of the energy to keep your home warm. Because water is able to contain and transfer such an incredibly high amount of heat, boilers don’t have to cycle nearly as often as furnaces do, which means better heating without the hassle of constantly running a furnace. Also, boiler systems can be effectively run through many different places in your home. Radiators are often positioned on ground level near the floor, which means more even heating in any room from top to bottom. Plus some boilers have heating grids installed in floors, which gives you added warmth and heat from your feet all the way up.
